Anglicans in Development is a web-based resource from Lambeth Palace and the Anglican Communion Office. Its purpose is to support church-based programmes to deliver better education, poverty reduction and peace building to local communities in the developing world. It does this by utilising the global networks of the Archbishop of Canterbury and his relationships with fellow bishops and church agencies to respond to local and regional needs for sustainable human development.
As Anglicans in development at Lambeth Palace our work in Africa is
focussed on the Great Lakes region and southern Sudan. Strengthening the
church's role in post conflict reconstruction represents one of the
best opportunities for the Church there, which is strengthening by the
day, to make a listing contribution to poverty alleviation.
"Delivery systems of development goals depend very, very heavily in practice throughout the world on local Christian communities"
Archbishop Rowan Williams
"My own vision for Anglicans in Development is very much to do with how we equip ourselves better with networks of communications and sharing of experience and setting of priorities.
We have the capacity to learn from one another, to give to one another and work with one another, not in a centralised or homogenising way, but creatively and respectfully as is appropriate to a Communion."
Archbishop Rowan Williams
The Revd David Peck is the Archbishop of Canterbury's Secretary for International Development, a new post within Lambeth Palace which the Archbishop established last year as a resource for the whole Communion. David was ordained in 1995 after theological studies at Cambridge University. Following a curacy he was Chaplain to the Bishop of Guildford, who was then Chair of Christian Aid, one of the UK's largest development NGOs. While Chaplain, David was seconded to work supported by the UK Foreign Office working with Primate of All Nigeria's team in Abuja on HIV and Education initiatives. While in Guidlford he also directed a major ecumenical research project funded by the Lord Chancellor's Department to quantify the church's role in offering community based support for marriage and family life. Prior to ordination, David worked for an international law firm in Washington, Wall Street and London.
Helen Stawski, who joined the International Development team at Lambeth Palace in February 2006, has been working alongside the Anglican Church in its mission and development activities for several years. Having worked for the Church Mission Society in London she lived in Uganda for a year, working closely with the Episcopal Church of Sudan on their developmental response to the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005. She has travelled to DRC, Kenya, Burundi and Southern Sudan, to work with Provincial development teams on their strategies for meeting Millennium Development Goals. Helen is a History and Sociology graduate from Warwick University and has a Masters in Social and Community Development from the International Development School at Sussex University. Trained in development and experienced in working with the Church's provincial and diocesan structures in the African Great Lakes Region, she works to bridge the gap between the Church and the international development agencies by cultivating understanding and collaboration among all stakeholders.
