Workshop on Enterprise Approaches to Poverty Reduction

A Workshop on Micro Enterprise Development (MED) and Small and Medium Enterprises(SME) and the Role of the Church.

July 9 to 12  2007 Kenya

Purpose:

To gain an in depth understanding of currently effective MED and SME programmes run by faith based organizations and Churches in Africa; particularly Kenya and in other parts of the world.

To examine Strategies, Models and Resources which can be implemented by the programmes set up by Churches

To identify project areas and projects where scale up is possible and begin preparation of business plans for submission to investors.

Note: Kenya is a pioneer in the field of MED and SME.It has a number of successful programmes. State policy and regulations, business culture and the enterprising qualities of the people  have all made Kenya an excellent context for economic development.This workshop should identify what the church can facilitate in initiating new efforts and scaling up existing ones.

Programme Components:

Begin with Worship and Bible study for 45 minutes each day

Sessions on the following areas and topics.

  1. MED and SME  Overview of its current status globally ( Vinay Samuel)
  2. MED in Kenya Approaches and Models
  3. MED and the Church In Africa and Kenya
  4. MODELS of SME from Africa and other parts of the world
  5. Resourcing MED and SME Training and Fund development
  6. Issues of Governance and Management
  7. Developing business plans

Outcomes

  1. New areas of microfinance identified.
  2. Scale up projects identified and process for developing business plans started.
  3. Strategy to find investors/investment funds developed.
  4. Capacity building programmed developed

Participants.  (proposed by the Archbishop)

10 bishops from 9 Christian Community Service regions.
2 clergy, provincial director of social services,provincial mission coordinator,3 kenyan MED experts,3 mothers union coordinators,
Provincial finance head, CAPA general secretary.6 lay people from different dioceses,2 community development workers and the Archbishop. Total of 31
