The Ngimbudzi Lunyanywi Livestock Farmers Association

In 2000 Canon Marko Mwafute shared his dream of livestock keeping with the parishioners at Lunyanwyi parish in the Diocese of south west Tanganyika (now Tanzania).  After discussion, a few parish parishioners agreed to try the dream...

Ten families formed a group called TUPENDANE meaning "let us share our love".  Using the Christmas gift that Canon Marko received from friends in England, Canada and Hong Kong they purchased ten cows and one bull.  On 20th May 2000 each family received a cow.  Later on many other families joined the venture organised in groups consisting of ten families.

Each family that receives a cow pays back a cow once their cow has calved.  The new cow is given enables a new family to join the scheme.  In the same way, a family who receives a piglet donates two piglets to the scheme - enable two more families to start pig-farming.

The association is non-denominational, non-political and non-governmental - serving people regardless of religious and political affiliations.

Since 20th May 2000 486 families have joined the scheme.  This project helps families combat poverty through the income raised from the selling of milk and meat.  The manure can also be used to aid crop growth which increases the harvest and the excess yield can then be sold.

The headquarters of the project are in Lunyanwyi, a village in Njombe District in Iringa Region, situated in the evergreen southern highlands of Tanzania.  In this area people also grow Irish potatoes, maize, peas and wheat.

A Christmas gift helps one or more families to get cow or piglets and participate in the project.

The association registration number is 146395.  I am the Co-ordinator of association and my correspondence address is:
